The Illustratio: Macao’s Catholic Intangible Cultural Heritage & Liturgical Feast Illustration project has been honored as a finalist in the Hiii Illustration 2023: The 11th Hiii Illustration International Competition. This prestigious competition received over 4,000 entries from more than 60 countries and regions.  Organized by the Associação Católica Cultural de Macau (ACCM) and sponsored by the Macao Foundation, the project showcases the works of ACCM’s in-house illustrator, Ray Pun (潘文珊). Originally launched in 2022, the project featured a widely acclaimed exhibition in Macao. It was complemented by the publication of an illustration book under the same name and a series of school tours to local institutions, promoting the rich cultural and historical significance of Macao’s Catholic intangible heritage and liturgical feasts.

The Hiii Illustration International Competition, established in 2012, has grown over the past decade to become one of the most influential illustration competitions in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. The award ceremony and exhibition of winning works were held on 14 December 2024 in Hangzhou, China. Two illustrations from the Illustratio project, Solemnity of The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Memorial of Our Lady of China, were featured in the exhibition.

Ray Pun, a native of Macao, currently a graphic designer and illustrator at ACCM, is a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts in Design program at Macao Polytechnic University. With extensive professional experience in both Macao and Shanghai, she has worked as a graphic designer at one of China’s leading creative companies, contributing to numerous artistic and large-scale commercial advertising projects focused on visual identity and production coordination. Her works have been showcased and nominated for awards in Macao, Shanghai, Taiwan, and across Asia.

Through Illustratio: Macao’s Catholic Intangible Cultural Heritage & Liturgical Feast Illustration, ACCM aims to visually convey the cultural and historical significance of 15 key Catholic intangible cultural heritage elements and distinctive liturgical feasts of Macao.  The project underscores ACCM’s commitment to preserving and promoting Macao’s Catholic traditions while fostering cultural exchanges and artistic innovation in the modern era.

The Associação Católica Cultural de Macau aims to continue to explore the different artistic areas that are closely connected to the mission of the Catholic Church and cultures of the contemporary world;  to continue the legacies of the four-century old Catholic culture and traditions of Macao; to build a platform of mutual understanding from a cultural perspective; to foster Sino-Western exchanges in the new era; and to contribute to the future of Macao’s society.
